Mexico Seizes Hidden Crypto Farm in Cartel Probe

Mexican authorities seized 300 GPUs from a hidden Puebla crypto farm while investigating electricity theft and possible money laundering.
Mexican authorities have seized a clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation hidden in the mountains of Puebla as investigators examine suspected electricity theft and whether the facility could have been used to launder money connected to criminal activity.
The operation was discovered in the municipality of Tlaola in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region, where authorities found around 300 specialized computing units, 80 medium-voltage terminals, a transformer and eight satellite internet antennas.
The facility is the fourth cryptocurrency mining operation discovered in the area since early 2025.
The mining operation was located near infrastructure connected to the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric system.
Authorities are investigating whether the facility was illegally drawing electricity from the nearby infrastructure to power its energy-intensive mining equipment.
Crypto mining itself is not prohibited in Mexico. The suspected electricity theft is a separate matter and is currently the main focus of the investigation.
Local residents told Reuters that the machinery was loud enough to be heard from roughly a kilometer away, despite the facility being located in a remote area.
The site was around two kilometers from the nearest village.
During the operation, Mexican federal authorities, the Navy and Puebla state security forces seized approximately 300 graphics processing units and other specialized equipment.
Authorities also found around 80 medium-voltage terminals, a transformer and eight satellite antennas.
The scale of the electrical infrastructure suggests the operation required a substantial amount of power to keep the equipment running and cooled.
Investigators are now examining the origin of the equipment and how the facility was connected to the surrounding power infrastructure.
Mexican authorities are also investigating whether cryptocurrency generated by the operation could have been used to give illicit funds the appearance of a legitimate source.
The Puebla government said investigators were examining whether virtual assets generated by the infrastructure could have been used to disguise money connected to criminal activity.
However, no specific cartel has been publicly identified as owning or operating the Tlaola facility.
The investigation into a possible money laundering connection remains ongoing.
The investigation comes as Mexican authorities continue to examine the growing use of cryptocurrency by organized crime groups.
Reuters reported that Mexican cartels have increasingly expanded their activities beyond traditional drug trafficking and extortion into financial crimes involving digital assets.
Security analyst David Saucedo told Reuters that the infrastructure found at the site indicates a significant level of technical expertise and financial investment.
That does not establish who was behind the Tlaola operation, however.
No operator or criminal organization has publicly been identified in connection with the seized facility.
The Tlaola seizure is not an isolated discovery.
Authorities have found three other cryptocurrency mining operations in the Puebla and Tlaxcala region since early 2025.
The repeated discoveries have prompted officials to investigate whether additional facilities could be operating in neighboring areas.
The Federal Electricity Commission is also involved in the investigation into the suspected power theft.
For now, investigators are still working to determine who operated the Tlaola facility, where the mining equipment came from and whether any cryptocurrency generated by the operation was connected to criminal proceeds.
The seizure therefore provides evidence of a large clandestine mining operation and suspected electricity theft, but a cartel connection and money laundering remain investigative possibilities rather than established facts.
