California Man Sentenced After Distributing CSAM on Dark Web

California Man Sentenced After Distributing CSAM on Dark Web

James David Johnson was sentenced to 151 months for distributing child sexual abuse material through multiple dark web communities.

A 58-year-old California man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material through multiple dark web communities and advising other users on how to evade law enforcement.

James David Johnson of Santee, California, was sentenced on September 11, 2026, to 151 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Johnson was a member of at least five dark web communities dedicated to child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of children.

He distributed large volumes of abusive images and videos through the communities and also provided advice to other users about avoiding detection by law enforcement.

On one of the websites, which included material depicting children being subjected to pain and suffering, Johnson eventually rose to become a high-ranking staff member.

The investigation eventually led FBI agents to execute search warrants at Johnson’s home and workplace.

Agents seized computer devices containing more than 260,000 images and videos of apparent child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Investigators also found autopsy and crime-scene photographs depicting deceased children.

The Justice Department did not state that all of the material recovered from Johnson’s devices had been distributed by him. The seizure figure represents the amount of apparent child sexual abuse and exploitation material found on the devices.

Johnson pleaded guilty on October 14, 2025, to distributing child pornography.

The case was investigated by the FBI‘s San Diego Field Office and the Child Exploitation Operational Section.

The prosecution was handled by the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative focused on investigating and prosecuting the online exploitation of children.

The sentence comes after an investigation that uncovered Johnson’s involvement across multiple dark web communities, including his activity as a high-ranking member of one community and his efforts to help other users avoid law enforcement.
