ShinyHunters Offers Lawyer After Odido Hack Voice Released

ShinyHunters says it has arranged a lawyer for a member after Dutch police released the voice of an Odido hack suspect.
The hacking group ShinyHunters says it has arranged a criminal defense lawyer for a member after Dutch police publicly released an audio recording of a suspect believed to be involved in the massive Odido data breach.
The Dutch police played the recording on the television program Opsporing Verzocht on September 7 in an attempt to identify the Dutch-speaking man.
You can listen to the recording here.
Police say the man called Odido’s customer service shortly before the February breach and pretended to be an employee from the company’s IT department.
The caller used detailed technical terminology and convinced an Odido employee that he was a colleague who needed help resolving an internal problem. The employee was then directed to a fake Odido login page and entered their username and password.
The attacker subsequently obtained the additional verification code required to access Odido’s internal systems.
The stolen data belonged to more than six million Odido customers, making the incident one of the largest data thefts in Dutch history.
The attackers demanded a ransom from Odido. The company refused to pay, after which the stolen information was published on the dark web.
Police have previously said the investigation produced strong indications that Dutch criminals were involved in the attack. Investigators also believe the people responsible may have discussed their involvement online or within their social circles.
Police had already obtained recordings of the phone call and in July asked the suspected caller to come forward.
When he failed to do so, investigators decided to release part of the recording publicly. A voice expert examined the recording and concluded that the voice is genuine and not AI-generated.
Police describe the suspect as a Dutch-speaking man with knowledge of information technology who uses specific English-language technical terminology.
Investigators believe these characteristics could help someone who knows the man recognize his voice.
Following the broadcast, ShinyHunters told Dutch broadcaster BNR that the man in the recording is a member of the hacking group.
The group said it fully supports the suspect and has arranged a criminal defense lawyer for him. ShinyHunters also criticized Dutch police and threatened further large-scale data theft in the Netherlands.
Police have declined to comment on the group’s statements while the investigation remains ongoing.
The police have not publicly identified the suspect or independently confirmed that he is a member of ShinyHunters.
As of today the Odido investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are continuing to look into the identity of the caller and other people who may have been involved.
The release of the recording represents an unusual step in the investigation, with police now relying on members of the public who may recognize the suspect’s voice.
For now, the identity of the man remains unknown publicly, while ShinyHunters’ claim that he is one of its members remains unverified by Dutch authorities.
